What's it like to be a Cashier?
Cashiers are customer service representatives who are typically stationed at the front of a store to process customer transactions. They take payments in exchange for goods or services, scan items and process returns and exchanges. Cashiers typically work on a roster schedule which can include flexible working arrangements.
Tasks and duties
- Working the cash register or other point-of-sale systems to process payments.
- Welcoming customers, answering queries and providing quick solutions or directions.
- Redeeming coupons and stamps.
- Processing returns and exchanges.
- Scanning items to be bagged.
- Reconciling sales receipts.
- Reporting issues about product defects or issues with equipment.
How to become a Cashier
You don’t need a formal qualification to become a Cashier. However, a good grasp of mathematics is usually required.

Pursue on-the-job training at your chosen retail or grocery store.

Generally, you don’t need certifications for a cashier role. However, some companies do require that you undergo their certification programs before you start.
