Pilates Bodyworks is the realization of the vision & fervour of its Singaporean Founding Director, Alvin Giam.Alvin’s encounter with Pilates resulted from his search for a solution to a serious back injury sustained from a sporting tournament in the 1970s. The injury left him with chronic back pains which affected his lifestyle & dampened his zest for living. Disappointed by the slow recovery under modern medicine & physiotherapy, he went in search for an effective rehabilitation from his injury.A series of coincidences lead Alvin to the Pilates Method. Then, it was largely practiced by dancers and gymnasts with serious injuries that left them unable to perform optimally. Pilates was wildly popular because of the remarkable recoveries and relapse prevention. It also improved overall body toning & control, bringing a distinguished grace and elegance to performers’ movements.Under the Pilates Method, Alvin’s pain from his back injury dissipated. He acquired a deep passion for the Work and a growing conviction that Pilates should not be confined to the realm of injury rehabilitation. Alvin allowed his heart to lead him and eventually chose to forego a prestigious legal career, to pursue his passion for Pilates. His trained for over two decades under a number of master trainers who were direct disciples of Joe & Clara Pilates . Alvin was one of the privileged few, who was able to learn the purest teachings & philosophy that were true to the original principles Pilates was based on. This undiluted insight was passed on from his master trainers, linking Alvin’s education lineage back to the founders of Pilates.Alvin has been fortunate to have studied for over two decades with Master Teachers Dianne Miller and Michelle Larsson. He also spent time with Mary Bowen and Patricia Guyton. He was instrumental in introducing the Ron Fletcher work to Asia and was the first in Asia to be personally certified by Ron. Alvin has been the only one in Singapore to have hosted workshops for the past 12 years, with Master Teachers Dianne Miller, Michelle Larsson, Patricia Guyton, Alan Herdmen and Ron Fletcher. It is Alvin’s personal mission, to share his life-changing experience with other people through Pilates Bodyworks and also to provide a professional center to educate future practitioners.A First in Asia and founded in 1999 Pilates Bodyworks has garnered numerous accolades since its inception. Aside from the glowing testimonials by its students, numerous articles in print & broadcast media have attested to the therapeutic benefits of its holistic approach to fitness and health.
