What's it like to be a Chemist?
Chemists typically require strong analytical and research skills. They perform experiments in a laboratory to analyse substances and develop or enhance products such as synthetic fibre, drugs or cosmetics. Chemists engage in complex research projects, such as developing new products and testing new methods. They also document their testing procedures including mixing times, operating temperatures and ingredients.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing test solutions, compounds and reagents for conducting tests.
- Researching chemical properties, compositions, structures, relationships and reactions.
- Developing, improving and customising chemical products, equipment, formulas and processes.
- Collaborating with scientists and engineers to analyse, interpret and develop tests.
- Writing technical papers, reports and specifications for products.
- Maintaining laboratory instruments, troubleshooting malfunctions and purchasing new laboratory supplies.
- Complying with laboratory safety procedures and standards.
How to become a Chemist
The first step to becoming a Chemist is to obtain a bachelor degree in chemistry or a related field. You then need to build industry experience.
Complete a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. This usually takes four years of college. Alternatively, you can become a Chemist with a degree in a related field, such as chemical engineering, environmental science or materials science.
Secure an apprenticeship while studying. Working as an intern is a good way to gain hands-on experience in chemistry, which may lead to a job offer as a Chemist.
To progress your career, consider completing an advanced degree at a graduate school. Some Chemists have masters or doctoral degrees. Advanced degrees are usually required for research and teaching positions.
