What's it like to be a Factory Worker?
Factory Workers produce high-quality products within a specific time frame using machinery and equipment. The skills needed and tasks performed by Factory Workers depend on the factory environment and industry in which they are employed. They may operate machines, check product quality, label and package the finished product and maintain the cleanliness of their area. All Factory Workers should be knowledgeable of procedures of safety.
Tasks and duties
- Maintaining the cleanliness of the production area.
- Checking product quality, testing samples, maintaining equipment, operating forklifts and aligning workpieces.
- Processing the products based on the required quantity and specifications.
- Labelling and safely packaging the merchandise.
- Ensuring that the items are free of any defects before distribution.
- Monitoring the supply inventories and reporting defective machines and equipment.
- Operating machines in the process of producing commodities.
- Examining the diverse products and other commodities.
How to become a Factory Worker
Formal qualifications are not a requirement to become a Factory Worker. However, previous job roles related to manufacturing and processing may be preferred by some hirers.

Choose which industry to work in. There are several industries to choose from, such as food, construction, manufacturing, automotive and utilities. A bachelor degree is not a requirement, so it is possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.

Apply for entry-level jobs and finish the On-the-Job Training (OJT) conducted by the company. Usually, this training is required by the company to orient you and provide you with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to perform the tasks associated with your job.

After gaining experience in your industry, you may choose to complete a qualification to advance your career from Factory Worker to a supervisory position such as Factory Manager.
