What's it like to be a Merchandiser?
Merchandisers select and acquire products for stores. They also manage the display of products in stores. They develop and execute sales, pricing, inventory management and marketing promotion strategies to maximise sales. Merchandisers often research market needs and customer feedback to help them stay updated on patterns in consumer behaviour.
Tasks and duties
- Managing inventory of stock.
- Planning purchases.
- Planning and managing the placement of display materials in stores.
- Travelling to stores and liaising with suppliers and staff.
- Coordinating the installation of window and lighting displays.
- Reviewing store sales figures.
- Creating and implementing sales promotions.
- Preparing reports and providing regular feedback on sales performance and competitor activities.
- Monitoring market and consumer behaviour.
How to become a Merchandiser
A bachelor degree or diploma is usually required to enter this role, as well as relevant experience.

Complete a diploma or bachelor degree in merchandising, retail, business or a related field.
- 2.
Gain relevant work experience. You could start off as a Sales Associate or Junior Merchandiser.
