What's it like to be a Personal Trainer?
A Personal Trainer may work independently as a freelancer or as an employee of a health club or gym. Personal Trainers identify the needs of their clients before creating workout plans that help them achieve their goals. They also teach clients how to perform exercises and motivate them to improve performance. Personal Trainers keep track of their clients’ fitness progress, as well emerging trends in the health and fitness industry.
Tasks and duties
- Designing customised training plans.
- Teaching exercise techniques and the proper use of gym equipment.
- Providing personal training to clients in a gym or via video call.
- Evaluating the needs and progress of clients.
- Addressing client enquiries.
How to become a Personal Trainer
To work as a Personal Trainer, certification is required. Additional tertiary qualifications in sports science may give you an advantage.

Get personal trainer certification through an education institution accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

You may also consider getting a NITEC in fitness training from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).
