What's it like to be a Room Attendant?
A Room Attendant usually maintains guest rooms in hospitality settings such as hotels, resorts and guesthouses. Their key responsibilities often include cleaning, tidying, replenishing supplies and making up beds in accordance with established standards. Furthermore, a Room Attendant may spot and report any maintenance issues, ensuring that guests' comfort and satisfaction are prioritised. They may also handle tasks like laundry provision and responding to guest requests for additional items or services. As this career predominantly lies within the service industry, strong interpersonal and communication skills can be beneficial.
Tasks and duties
- Cleaning and restoring rooms to company standards, including making beds, vacuuming floors and dusting furniture.
- Replenishing room supplies such as toiletries, beverages and linens.
- Inspecting the rooms and reporting any damages, malfunctions or shortages to the maintenance department.
- Ensuring all room equipment and appliances are in good working order.
- Collecting and disposal of rubbish from the guest rooms.
- Maintaining records of cleaned rooms and reporting any guest-related incidences.
- Promoting excellent guest satisfaction by providing high-quality cleaning.
How to become a Room Attendant
Formal education is not mandatory for an aspiring Room Attendant. However, further training and education via the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or a Polytechnic diploma in Hospitality may help you progress in this career path.
- 1.Complete at least a GCE O-Level or the equivalent.
- 2.Participate in on-the-job training. It allows you to learn specific cleaning procedures, safety protocols, and standards of cleanliness expected by your employer.
- 3.Familiarise yourself with health and safety regulations specific to Singapore and the hospitality industry.
