Accounting Staff
Got laid off after taking long MC. How can i fight this?? I was on medical leave for a while (2 months) due to health issues. Came back thinking I could ease back into work but instead, I was told I’m being let go. Boss claims it’s “company restructuring,” but the timing feels way too suspicious. I can’t help but feel my MC played a part in this. Can I report it to MOM? How do I even prove they fired me because of my medical leave? Honestly, I’m too shocked and devastated right now😢

I have a staff as well who takes a lot of MC, like 2-3 times a month. But lucky me, the staff is a very good performer and always exceeds deliverables. As a manager, I don't mind it at all. As long as the MCs are legitimate, I believe HR won’t raise any concerns either. So far, no bad comments from them about my team abusing their MC entitlement

Got one colleague who's always sick. At first we thought she couldn't adjust to the workplace coz she's kinda new, But later our boss told us she has some health issues which explains why she’s often away. A few weeks ago, she got her first warning letter for taking too many MCs, if think it was close to 10 days. HR then made her sign an agreement not to take MCs for the next 3 mths. So basically any company have right stop employees from taking MC when they still haven't exceeded the limit?

This sounds really unfair, and I’m so sorry you’re going through this. You can report it to MOM, but proving it was due to your MC might be tricky unless there’s clear evidence. Check if others were also laid off or if your role was specifically removed. Look through emails or performance records to show there was no prior issue with your work. If you suspect discrimination, seek legal advice or talk to TAFEP. Don’t let them get away with this. Stay strong! 💪

Even if you try to report to MOM, it gonna be a longggg process. I feel bad what happen to you.. not sure what company you’re in before. But nothing much you can do if you want to go against big company. You lost your job and need to find new one that you can do with your injury or else wait until you fully recovered. You were not injured at work either.

It’s a bit hard for me to understand your situation, could you share how you managed to get approval for 2 months of leave? From what I know, my ex-colleague had surgery and took 22 days of MC, but the company only approved 14 days since that’s the limit. The rest had to be taken as unpaid leave. Just wondering, do you have a team covering for you, or are you working solo?

there is more to your story maybe.. like how is your work performance there? i dont think company would simply fire people because of MCs.

How long have you been working with the company? The years of service could be a factor too. If you're just started then they have a reason to dismiss you since you unable to commit fully for the first 6 months. But if your years of service is more than 10 years, they might decided the time to retrench you with compensation an amount that reflects your years of service.

2 months is quite a long time bro, around 40 days. Are you alright? What happened, if you don’t mind sharing

erm... this is weird but very interesting case. To fire someone is not something that can be simply done by company, especially when you have a legitimate MC 🤔 Usually company will find other ways to terminate you, but again it all depends on your work type, things that could harm you for e.g..
