Every day at work, my inbox is flooded with corporate emails filled with buzzwords. Some I get, but others just drive me nuts. The one that truly gets under my skin? “Revert.” Like, why can’t we just say “reply”? 😂 I used to think it meant going back to something! Learning a new language is exciting, but wow, it can get expensive. I’ve spent on apps, books, and even online courses, and it all adds up. Thinking of taking proper classes, but the fees are no joke. For those who’ve learned a new language, how much did you end up spending? Was it worth it, or are there cheaper ways to get fluent?

It seems like everyone’s on Duolingo these days! I’ve tried it myself to pick up some basic Chinese for work, but I’m still unsure if it’s the best way to really get the hang of it. 1- Some days, it feels super effective. Bite-sized lessons that are fun and easy to learn. 2- But when I tried to use it in real life, I felt like I needed a teacher to explain things properly and help with pronunciation. Guess it really depends on how you learn best. Anyone else had the same experience?

My boss wants to send me to China for 2 weeks on a business trip, but I’m super stressed bcos i cannot speak Chinese. I only able to understand what they say but to respond.. it might take awhile 😮‍💨 I know the trip could be a great opportunity, so I don’t want to mess it up. I’m thinking of telling my boss honestly, maybe suggesting I need a bit more time to improve my language skills.

Starting 2024 till date, I'm seeing more job listings that ask for bilingual skills, and it got me thinking...what’s the next big language that’ll give a career edge in SG? Mandarin is always useful, but with global markets shifting, would picking up Japanese, Korean, or even something like Spanish or Arabic be a smarter move? Anyone here learned a new language that actually helped them land better job opportunities and bigger salary? What language is that?

Didnt expect that learning mandarin can be tough... now I’m so tired 😮‍💨 I feel like I’m putting in the effort in classes, apps, even awkward convos but still minimal progression. I’m this close to calling it quits. But a part of me feels guilty because I know it’s such a useful language, and learning FEE is not that cheap..

I’ve been trying to learn Japanese for the past year, but juggling it with my 9-to-6 job is no joke. 😩 By the time I get home, I’m so brain-dead that even simple vocabulary drills feel like so tiring. At most I learn from watching animes and reading my manga haha. Anyone here managed to learn a language while working full-time? What worked for you? Apps, classes, sneaky lunchtime practice?
