I’m a banana—can’t read or write Chinese, and only speak a little. I’m not proud of it, but I’m not ashamed either. I grew up in an English-speaking environment, and it just turned out this way. But at my current workplace (mostly Chinese-speaking), I sometimes feel judged. A few colleagues think I’m being “pretentious” for not speaking Mandarin fluently or avoiding it. Anyone else been through this? How do you deal with the judgement without feeling like you have to change who you are?

Is speaking mandarin really a requirement in Asia? I’ve been hearing forever that picking up Mandarin can open doors in the job market, especially with China being such a major economic player. But is that true across industries? I started learning last year but still mix up tones—my colleagues laugh when I try ordering food in Chinese 😅 For those who speak it: has it helped you land better roles or connect with clients? I’m learning Korean now because I really want to work in Korea someday. But sometimes I wonder, is that too big of a stretch? Hi all, I work as advocacy adviser and I'm thinking about learning a new language to boost my career prospects. Can anyone share which languages are currently in high demand among employers, especially in this field? I know Mandarin and Spanish have been popular, but I’m curious to know if there are other languages that would give me an edge in the job market. My company wants me to learn Japanese but I’m seriously struggling. I’ve been asked to handle more Japan-based clients and was told it would be good for my growth if I can speak Japanese. I agreed at first, but now I’m feeling the pressure. I tried Duolingo, YouTube, even podcasts during my commute… but with my current workload, I barely have time to rest, let alone study. It’s not that I don’t want to learn, but how do you guys manage language learning while working full-time?

In my team, most people are fluent in Mandarin and naturally switch to it during casual convos or even in meetings. I only know basic phrases and sometimes I just sit there awkwardly, pretending to understand. 😅 I want to blend in better and not feel like the odd one out, but picking up a new language as an adult while juggling work isn't easy. Anyone else face this at work? Do you just slowly pick it up or go for proper lessons?

It seems like everyone’s on Duolingo these days! I’ve tried it myself to pick up some basic Chinese for work, but I’m still unsure if it’s the best way to really get the hang of it. 1- Some days, it feels super effective. Bite-sized lessons that are fun and easy to learn. 2- But when I tried to use it in real life, I felt like I needed a teacher to explain things properly and help with pronunciation. Guess it really depends on how you learn best. Anyone else had the same experience?
