I’ve been working as a technician for a while, but lately, I’ve been feeling stuck—like I’m just going through the motions without any real growth. I’ve looked into getting certifications, but honestly, it feels like just another piece of paper that doesn’t add much value. How do you break out of the routine and actually find meaningful progression in this field without burning out? And is it even worth staying in the long term?

companies that don’t want to spend on proper maintenance but still expect everything to run perfectly. And when things go wrong? We’re the first to kena blame. Some days, it feels like no matter how hard we work, it’s never enough. Who else is facing this problem in work?

People always look up to Engineers. Reasoning is they're the ones who come up with “brilliant” ideas, but when things go wrong, technician guy like me will do the clean up. Meanwhile, management team always looking for ways to cut costs, delaying maintenance, and blaming us when things break down. Not to mention safety concerns that get ignored until something serious happens.

Since i taking this technician job. I always busy around the clock like troubleshooting machines, doing preventive maintenance, and responding to breakdowns. By the time I get home, I’m too drained to study or pick up new skills. I want to move up, maybe into an engineering or specialist role, but how do you upskill when there’s literally no time? How can i break out of this routine??

I have only N-level and I’m trying to apply for technician jobs but all I see is (Nitec without experience can apply or Nitec in process ) I have no experience either . Is it better for me to go and take up courses ? If yes what a the courses will be helpful for me . So far I have applied for operations tech ,process tech , lab tech basically more towards the Jurong island kinda jobs .

Are apprenticeships for technicians still a thing in Singapore? I’ve been looking for a proper training path, but it feels like companies are only hiring people with experience these days. It’s tough to break into the field without that. Anyone has suggestions on program or companies I can apply to that are open to training new talent?

7 years as technician I’ve gained a lot of hands-on experience, now my time to get a degree to become an engineer. The thing is, I’m in my 30s, and an engineering degree will take about 5 years. I’m wondering if it’s worth the time and effort at this stage in my life. For those who’ve made the switch, how was the transition? Did it open more doors? Also, what’s the best path to move from technician to engineer?

I've been working as a technician for a while, but recently, my family has been telling me there's no future in it. They say I should be aiming for something more "prestigious" or with better career growth. It got me thinking—am I just stuck in this role forever? Is there really no future in being a technician, or is there room for growth if I just make the right moves? Anyone else has proven your family wrong? How did you do that?
