I’m working as a technician now, earning around $2k basic, but with allowances can reach about $3k. Planning to switch company and want to ask for at least a 20% pay raise. Problem is, I’m worried new employer might not count my allowances as part of my salary and offer less than I expect. How do you recommend I bring this up during salary talks so I get fair pay including the allowance that i get every month? Honestly hoping to get $3.5k or above this time.

As a technician, the work is tough and the heat in SG is no joke, but I’m actually pretty happy with what I do. Fixing aircons, wiring, and pipes might seem simple to some, but it’s a skill and there’s a lot of pride in getting things done right. Sure, it’s hard labour, but at the end of the day, seeing the results and knowing I’ve helped people is so rewarding. I hope one day I'll be able to open my own business and become my own boss with the skills that I have. Do you think it's doable?

As a technician, I’m trying to figure out how to climb the career ladder. I know there are different paths in the field, but I’m unsure what the end goal should be. Is the natural progression to become a manager, or are there other roles I should be aiming for? I enjoy the hands-on work, but I’m wondering if there’s something more I can work towards to grow in my career. Anyone who started out from the bottom, what did you do to take your career to the next level?

Feel like a technician, planner, and admin all rolled into one! I sign up to fix things, not to spend hours doing paperwork. But nowadays, being a technician also means reporting, updating Excel, chasing for parts, and writing emails to people who don’t reply. 😮‍💨 Not complaining about the job, but it’s starting to feel like I’m doing three roles at once. Anyone else in the same boat? How do you juggle all these extra tasks without burning out?

I’ve looked into getting certifications, but honestly, it feels like just another piece of paper that doesn’t add much value. companies that don’t want to spend on proper maintenance but still expect everything to run perfectly. And when things go wrong? We’re the first to kena blame. Some days, it feels like no matter how hard we work, it’s never enough. Who else is facing this problem in work?

People always look up to Engineers. Reasoning is they're the ones who come up with “brilliant” ideas, but when things go wrong, technician guy like me will do the clean up. Meanwhile, management team always looking for ways to cut costs, delaying maintenance, and blaming us when things break down. Not to mention safety concerns that get ignored until something serious happens.
