I really want to attend this training to upgrade myself, but it's expensive and my company won’t cover it. They claim it's not relevant to my current role, but I genuinely believe it can help me contribute more in the long run. I’m torn, should I invest my own money even though there’s no support from them? Part of me feels it’s unfair, but another part wants to grow. Anyone managed to convince their boss in a situation like this? How did you show it’s worth the cost?

I’ve taken a bunch of online courses and earned a few certs to boost my resume. While they look good on paper, I honestly don’t know how to apply what I’ve learned in the actual job. The classes were so theoretical, nothing like the messy, fast-paced nature of work. Sometimes I feel a bit lost and question if those certs are even useful beyond impressing HR. Anyone else feel this way? How do you actually make use of what you learn from online courses in daily work?

Been working hard to complete online certs to level up my skills. But lately I keep hearing things like “Certs no use one,” or “Why waste time? Experience more important" from my family. I get that hands-on experience matters, but does that mean upskilling is pointless? I’m genuinely trying to improve myself, not just for show. Anyone else faced this kind of discouragement? How do you respond without sounding defensive? Or better yet—how do you prove your certs are worth it?

Every job posting I see these days comes with a requirement list of certs—PMP, CFA, Google this, Tableau that. It’s overwhelming. I get that upskilling is important, but some of these courses aren’t cheap, and there’s no guarantee they’ll actually lead to a better job or higher pay. I don’t want to throw money at random certs just because it looks good on paper. For those of you who did get hired or promoted after getting certified, which ones actually made a difference?
