People think QS just sits in an office crunching numbers, but wah, sometimes it feels like we’re the only ones trying to make sure a project doesn’t go over budget. Boss wants things fast, contractors want more money, and somehow we have to make it all work. Is it just me, or does it feel like QS is always caught in the middle of everyone’s mess?

QS life is not just sitting in the office crunching numbers. We deal with unrealistic budgets, tight deadlines, and clients who think everything can be done cheaper and faster. And then there’s the never-ending paperwork. 😮💨 For those in QS, what’s the most frustrating part of the job? And is the career growth worth all the stress? Some days, I wonder if the long hours are even worth it.

I've been hearing a lot about Quantity Surveying as a career, but most explanations online feel quite generic—budgets, contracts, cost estimation. I get the gist, but I want to know what the job is really like from those in the field. Is it more office-based or site-heavy? How’s the work-life balance? And what kind of career growth can you expect? Curious because my brother is planning to pursue this career but he seems clueless and only believing what he's reading on the internet. Thanks!

is it just me or is the surveying industry changing? I’ve been in this industry for a few years, and it feels like things are evolving fast, new tech, tighter deadlines, and more demand for digital skills like CAD and GIS. It’s exciting, but also a bit overwhelming. Are you guys noticing the same trends? Do you think traditional surveying skills are still as important, or is everything going digital?

What's the pros and cons of online surveying versus in person surveying? In person surveying is more traditional and seems to be able to get responses faster. But do you think in person surveying also yields inaccurate results since people might be in a hurry, as compared to online surveying where respondents can think through responses longer and with more intent? What are your thoughts on this... 🧐

I’ve realized how underrated this job profession is. It’s not just about counting bricks or estimating costs; we’re the backbone of construction projects, ensuring everything stays within budget while maintaining quality. With the boom in infrastructure and green building projects, the demand for QS is growing. Plus, there’s room to specialize in areas like contracts, sustainability, or even project management. I'm staying for long-term in this field. WBU?

Being a quantity surveyor sometimes feels like playing referee in a game where no one agrees on the rules. One day, it’s contractors complaining about cost cuts; the next, clients are questioning every line in the BOQ. Deadlines are tight, budgets even tighter, and everyone expects miracles. On top of that, navigating site conditions versus office expectations can be a nightmare. How do you balance accuracy, diplomacy, and sanity in this role? Feels like a juggling act every day

Want to ask, how do you guys gauge if your salary is competitive? 🤔 with all the responsibilities like cost estimating, contract management & liaising with so many stakeholders.. I feels like the workload is heavy, but is the pay reflecting that... Also, what’s the salary progression like in this field here, worth sticking it out long-term or better to jump to related roles like project management?

Just had my KPI review, and i got some solid constructive feedback from my boss. They said I need to up my presentation skills and be more proactive in cross-team collabs. Honestly, a bit overwhelming, but also feels like a chance to level up. 💪 How do you guys tackle specific feedback like this? Any tips to turn it into success? Thinking of taking a course or shadowing teammates who excel in these areas. Open to all suggestions

I was put on a PIP recently, and it’s honestly been a mix of emotions—frustration, anxiety, and a bit of self-doubt. It feels like a line in the sand: do I stick it out and prove my worth, or is this a sign it’s time to move on? Part of me wants to rise to the challenge, improve, and show that I belong. But there’s also a nagging worry—what if the PIP is just a formality before the door closes? I’m torn between pushing forward to prove myself or using this energy to find a better fit elsewhere.
