I've over 5 years of working experience so I no longer need a degree to prove my worth, rite? Got called to few interviews, while some of them don't look at my education certs anymore, 2 of them ACTUALLY told me that I better get a degree to increase my chances. I'm so confused. Like why?? My long list of experiences are not enough to impress you but a piece of paper will? I'm honestly baffled. Pls let me know for those without a degree, hv you experienced this type of discrimination too??

Honestly, this kind of mindset still exists in some industries but plenty of companies in SG value skills and experience over formal education these days. You see yourself, only 2 out of all those IVs you attended asked about a degree. Just keep pushing forward, and don’t let outdated hiring practices make you doubt your worth!

feel you 🥹🥹🥹 It’s ridiculous how a piece of paper can outweigh actual hands-on experience. Some companies just can’t let go of their old-school hiring mindset. Their loss, then.

Been there! You could have 10 years of solid experience, but some HR filters will still bin your resume just because of a missing degree 🤣 nonsense right. But after all I took part-time degree as it's already in one of my life goals after 5 years of working. It's not easyyy 😬😬

Not all companies think like this. You got interviews, which means your experience is valued. Those two companies? Maybe just not the right ones.

I am same with you, working 5+ years and only got a Diploma too. Feel like a lot of companies would rather looking for the degree than a working experiences. I have think before i working that to further study to get a Degree if necessary. But throughout the working life, it is not really needed currently maybe in future. Don’t doubt your value! We must trust our values, just they are not the right one. Not your problems.

Mm, actually, it depends on the industry. In my field, that piece of paper is still pretty important because it sets a baseline for technical knowledge and certain qualifications are non-negotiable for career progression. Some roles require specific certifications or licensing that only come with a degree. That said, I do think experience should weigh more in some cases, but unfortunately, many companies still use degrees as a quick way to filter candidates.

Exactly! I have 10 years of sales experience but am not qualified for some of the entry-level level because of my education.

uhhh but the fact that you got multiple interviews means companies see value in your experience. Yea la cant deny some companies still want that degree..

I think it depends on the position you're applying for. I have a master degree and 8 years of experience in a diploma and degree role but I don't even get a single calls for interviews. I've been applying for years. The more experience you get the harder it is to get a job here.

The fact certificate is still important if you are looking for new job. If you have working experience but no degree will have to depend on your communication skills 😁
