So many people bashed me regarding my post on the poor attitude of my intern who wants to go home on time&doesnt take extra workload. Allow me to explain myself.
1) An intern SHOULD stay back&WAIT for their supervisor to finish work, to show dedication to the company.
2) Asking for extra tasks after completing your work is a sign of commitment, hard work & being proactive.
3) It is CRUCIAL to nurture youngsters on the importance of RESPECT towards seniors to humble them.
Disagree? Fine by me.

1. Waiting for a supervisor to finish work isn't dedication, but rather, a lack of time management.
2. Asking for extra tasks can be seen as proactive, but it's not the only measure of commitment or hard work.
3. Nurturing respect towards seniors shouldn't be about "humbling" youngsters, but rather, about teaching them professional etiquette and communication skills. Respect is a two-way street and should be earned, not demanded.

I get it, but this feels more like a power dynamic than a teaching moment. Respect is a two-way street. Instead of forcing long hours, nurture a positive work culture could motivate interns to go above and beyond willingly.

Walao auntie, you're one strong headed boss lah! Actually I can see from your POV also. Because your intern girl is still new to the working world, so i understand that you want to shape her worldview from now when she's still young and innocent, to make her a great employee one day. I don't blame you but Gen Z nowadays really appreciate WLB so your approach might be a lil harsh on them. Maybe you can tweak your style a bit lah..

I think you should also remember internships are learning roles not cheap labour. You want that level of commitment then they have to be paid like a full timer. Interns eat what $600-$900/ month? That barely covers transport and expenses, if they want to go home on time, I really don’t think it’s unreasonable. If you’re not paying them overtime to stay and wait for you, don’t expect them to stay unless you’re going to fulfil your contractual obligation to the employee and pay for over time.

Extra workload and staying late shouldn't be equated with dedication. It's better to focus on the quality of the work and how they engage with tasks during their hours. Just my pov

Internships are a learning experience, not a test of endurance. Interns need guidance, not rigid rules like staying late unnecessarily. Leadership is about inspiring, not commanding; dedication comes when they feel connected to the work. Respect must be mutual and modelled by leaders. Interns balance studies and work, so empathy is key. Encourage innovation, not just extra tasks, to build confidence. A positive, nurturing culture fosters growth, commitment, and long-term value.

Humbling youngsters is one thing, but setting unrealistic expectations might push them away from the workforce entirely 😊

I think your mindset is very outdated and not applicable in today’s working world. Please step out of your boomer’s mindset.
1) An intern or any employee should not be staying back to wait for their supervisor to finish work- this expectation is unreasonable, work done finish for the day? Go home and rest. Anyway work forever cannot finish one la, everyday sure got new task or some backlog to clear.

I usually wait for my supervisor to go home before i actually prepare to go home. But everytime he’ll ask me to go back first after settling my task, if not also he’ll ask me to continue tomorrow
