Is speaking mandarin really a requirement in Asia? I’ve been hearing forever that picking up Mandarin can open doors in the job market, especially with China being such a major economic player. But is that true across industries? I started learning last year but still mix up tones—my colleagues laugh when I try ordering food in Chinese 😅 For those who speak it: has it helped you land better roles or connect with clients? And for those who don’t, do you feel like you’re missing out?

It will of course, also would recommend you to do some upskilling in tech of your choice.

unfortunately... i can relate to your experience on this. Can see many of SMEs and companies here, owned by foreign Chinese bosses. they tend to use Chinese/mandarin a lot in the daily interactions as well as work communication, especially if the employers or client are from China.

Undeniable it does, and it really depends on the job. In MNCs or tech, English usually gets you by. But if you work in manufacturing, knowing Mandarin was a huge plus.
