Salary negotiations are the part of job hunting that always makes me nervous. One time, I undersold myself and realized later I could’ve asked for more. Another time, the HR rep asked for my “expected salary” upfront, and I panicked, thinking, “If I aim too high, I might lose the job; if I aim too low, I’ll lose money.” How do you guys navigate this? Do you have any go-to phrases or strategies for handling salary discussions confidently?

I used to panic too, but here’s my trick: let them speak first. If HR asks for my expected salary, I respond with, “I’d love to understand the full scope of the role first. What’s the range you’ve budgeted?” If they insist on a number, I aim slightly higher than my target so there’s room to negotiate. Worst case? If I lowball myself again, I tell my reflection: “You tried your best, buddy.” 😂
