Marketing Manager
Just because I'm a female, I should earn less?? Got promoted to manager level in Dec 24, after working SO HARD for it but the celebration didn’t last long. Found out my male peers in the same role are earning SIGNFICANTLY MORE than me. Same title, similar responsibilities, yet here I am stuck with a smaller paycheck. It’s frustrating because it feels like my work is valued less just because I’m a woman! How do I even begin to address this issue without sounding petty or overly sensitive?

Just get over it sis! Why don't u start thinking abt how can u ask for a raise w/o mentioning what ur peers were making. For all you know.. u're comparing urself to someone who was totally mediocre. U're also likely not 100% aware what expectations were placed on them. Stick to what u know for certain, provide goal measurements where ever possible. Don’t dwell too much on volume of work, but focus on complexity, success & how u can improve the team by providing additional value as a new manager.

I don’t think it’s gender biase same title similar responsibilities does not equates the same experience. You may have been recently promoted but they may have been there in the same position for years.

FYI that’s not how pay works. They pay you what they think you will work for, not what value the job creates. If you think it’s too low, then you need to leave, but don’t hold your coworker’s salary up as “what right looks like.” There’s a lot of factors at play as to why they are getting paid what they do.

That's odd. In my personal experience usually in marketing there's way more women than men. Every marketing professional I know in real life is a woman and I see tons of women on LinkedIn working in marketing roles. I would assume they potentially earn more since it's a high-demand field among females. How many male managers are there?

Ugh, I feel for you. Sadly, this is still a problem in so many places. Maybe start by asking the manager for a salary review based on market rate. Dont mention about the gender.. it’s harder to argue against facts. And remember, you’re not being petty. You’re advocating for what’s right!

Sorry to ask this - Does the coworker have the same number of years of experience as you, or are you both the same in terms of experience and education?

does it mean that everyone in the same role / workscope should be paid a similar salary ? what about experience and capabilities to deliver results . Better to self reflect and assess oneself abilities prior to asking for a pay review . if not happy just find a new job. True success is to find the highest paying job while doing minimum .

Well at least you got rewarded by your boss then moved into higher position. In my case I'm stuck in the same position nearly 8 years. Despite all the good pay check + positive feedback from my boss.. I still frustrated over that cause I put a lot of effort and do work seriously. TBH I feel my value is not rewarded as it should be.. Like you, I’ve seen a colleague with less experience and younger than me get promoted to team lead, while I’m overlooked

Now that you’re the new manager, it might be a good idea to speak up a bit about this. Have you applied for a promotion or discussed your career goals and aspirations with your boss? Sometimes, bosses assume someone isn’t interested in moving up if they haven’t explicitly expressed it. Maybe that male colleague of yours had that conversation with him. Could be that's how he get the offer
