Why do companies refuse to pay more, even within budget?? My team is hiring and we had a superb candidate with strong profile, great interview and boss loved him. But last minute, things didn't work out bcz he asked for a higher salary than offered, even though his request is still within our budget. Boss said it’s better to hire below budget because using the full amount is “harder to justify” to higher management. IDK if it’s a boss issue or company culture but I need to rethink staying here.

Honestly, this kind of “budget over value” mindset says a lot about company priorities. If they won’t fight for good people, it’s fair to question if your own worth is being fully recognized too. Definitely worth thinking carefully about whether this is a place that will value you long-term. I know for sure I'm not staying either.

ohh wow so this is normal? i actually encountered the same, i mean i just asked for what i think i deserved (still in their salary range) then the boss said i asked for too high, then i justified why i deserve that much, then the she said, it's not easy to justify to the higher ups..

RIGHTTT! The "justify to higher management" excuse means they've already given up fighting for anything. You're gonna waste months now finding someone worse, onboarding them, and probably doing it all over again when they leave.

OMG actually got me thinking that maybeee "harder to justify" when the justification is "we found an exceptional candidate who everyone wants and he's literally within the approved range." 😁
