Why do Singaporeans insist on keeping their salaries a secret?? I had a conversation with a colleague the other day, and when I asked about salary ranges, he just froze. Why the secrecy? If we shared this info, we'd know if we're being underpaid rite? But no, we all kept in the dark. I get it’s personal, but why are we SO SCARED to talk abt it? This “don’t ask, don’t tell” culture is ridiculous. I’m sick of wondering if I’m being undervalued bcz no one speaks up. Enough of salary gatekeeping!

This will cause morale issue. Imagine someone who on par rank as you, but that person just joined and getting higher pay. What will your reaction be? The reason why it kept secret, is to ensure fairness. If not tripartite will be super busy just to solve this pay difference issue.

Since you encourage salary transparency... Thought it’d be interesting to share and compare. But no pressure of course! we keep it chill no negative vibes. Just remember that we have different journey here, whether it’s due to skills, timing, luck, or the company we’re in.
I start first:
38 / Male, Shipping industry. Role as operations. Annual pay SGD100K

TBH i've personally benefitted from salary transparency. I do hope we can encourage more open conversation on this topic. Even i see lots of content creators tried to do salary transparency street interviews in Sg but many scared to be interviewed, which is kind of sad.

I found out that I'm earning less than all the new hires at my job. It shocking me tbh, cause i did ask for a raise last year but they won't give me. So I stopped work hard as I used to be. Now I just do what’s needed to be done at my slow pace. Take all my breaks that i really needed. The only way to get paid more is to resign and hope they rehire me at a higher rate 🙂

You're right! Isn't it great to be transparent with salaries so we all know that we aren't being underpaid by our employer.

I totally agree. In fact, income transparency like EU Pay Transparency is the way to go for future societies. We will told to live cooperatively and harmoniously in the society but inequality and injustice has only excerbated over the decades. Transparency for all is a necessary first step!

I don’t talk about salary with coworkers, but ok to share with friends. To me.. im worried if we share that we earn more, people might expect you to do more. If you earn less, they might look down on you. Previously i asked HR why I didn’t get the bonus I was promised... They said I'm not supposed to know it was given out already because apparently the bonus is not to be discussed. Idiots.

I am underpaid. Working for 3++ years in this company, salary increment $250 only. Holding $3.1k as Architect Designer. Want to change job but many companies know my current salary then already trying to convince me to accept 20% increment, that is so sad to hearing this.

If you know you are paid lower than your peers, when the workload is the same. How will you feel ? Will you feel bitter and unhappy and no mood to continue to work? If you are paid higher, of course you are happy and joyed.
